The Coddling of the American Mind by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt

The premise of this book centers around three “Great Untruths” that have permeated our society.

  1. What doesn’t kill you makes you weaker.
  2. Always trust your feelings.
  3. Life is a battle between good people and evil people.

I have to say, I was quite fascinated by this read. The authors make a compelling case in correlating these three great untruths with recent trends (e.g., barring speakers from college campuses, the stunted maturity of iGeners and the overall polarization of society). They note that the proliferation of social media and a culture that embraces “safetyism” has only exacerbated the problem.

For anyone concerned with the infringement on first amendment rights or the growing divisiveness in our society, this book is worth a look.
